Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe and Yayoi Kusama are the three female artists I focus on in my thesis project. I have always known their names and their art, but it was only after I began to read their letters, diaries and memoirs that I fell in love with their spirit and strength. I wanted to create a small book examining these artists’ lives, and to further understand how their experiences informed their work. Each chapter moves seamlessly to the next with the letters each wrote to the other artist. The Frida Kahlo chapter ends with a letter she wrote to Georgia O’Keeffe, and the Georgia O’Keeffe chapter ends with a letter she wrote to Yayoi Kusama, who is the subject of the third chapter. In a way I wanted these intimate letters to also be able to help my audience transition from one artist to the next. I connected letters, diaries and memoirs along with a few pieces of art to bring readers/viewers closer to them. I hope to show the extraordinary resilience of these women, to convey the beauty of their art, but also to reveal their humanity as daughters, sisters, friends, and partners.
