Language is not limited to spoken and written words—language is also expressed visually, kinesthetically, and culturally. These modes of expression can only be learned fluently by being immersed in that language—however some unique nuances of other languages can still be introduced visually.
Other Language is a growing collection of designs and illustrations that visualize six basic phrases: Hello / Nice to meet you / How are you? / It goes well! / Cheers / I love you. For this project I created a design prompt for graphic artists, designers, and illustrators to visually interpret the same basic phrases; a website to collect and display the finished pieces; and the typeface used throughout the site. The goal of this project is to show the richness of other languages that can’t be shown through type alone, and most importantly, to connect people who don’t speak the same language through visual design.
