Picnic is a proposal for a quarterly publication that strives to connect people from different cultures through their stories and experiences, using food as a basis for the exploration. The sense of belonging through food, tradition and gathering around the dining table has always been of great interest to me. As a result, my initial starting point for a thesis theme was to explore the role of food in the formation of our self identity and it’s relationship within a social and cultural context. This evolved into Picnic magazine. It’s focus on food attempts to serve as a gateway into intimate moments shared with an individual, friends or family with the goal of exposing the reader to different cultures and traditions. It is an opportunity for the reader to take a pause and refl ect on the meaning of both the food we put on our tables and the rituals we observe around them; who we invite and what we talk about.
