What do I love doing most? That’s how this project started. Growing up, I loved listening to music and singing along. I developed a passion for performing arts, and it has been part of my life ever since.
Broadcasts From Within examines my passion for singing. It is divided into three films: Sincerity, Guts, and Abstraction. Sincerity recounts my personal journey in music and how I came to pursue an art career. Guts explores why people sing despite the risk of humiliation. And Abstraction, a meditation on the definition of singing, traces the evolution of singing from prehistoric/prelinguistic vocalizations to the myriad of styles and techniques utilized by contemporary performers.
Each of these films consist of a song that relates to the topic in its title: "The Great Dipper" by Roy Kim represents a genre close to my heart, Korean Ballads, "All of Me" by John Legend is my go-to song at karaoke bars and Sam Smith’s "Stay with Me" symbolizes the pinnacle of singing prowess I aspire to. By translating these ideas into film and a physical LP format, this project bridges the internal and the external, turning something deeply personal into a shared experience. Ultimately, Broadcasts From Within is an invitation for myself and for others to listen more closely to the voices we carry inside, and to find meaning in the act of letting them be heard.
