The Sound of ___ replaces visual identity with sound-based identity, challenging the dominant way we recognize people and places through sight. By using sound as the primary source of identification, I reimagine systems that rely heavily on visual cues and shift attention to something often overlooked. While there are many ways to identify someone, the most common method is through facial recognition, connecting it to memory and familiarity. In a society where identity is increasingly tied to appearance, I question whether it is possible to recognize someone without relying on visual factors.
This project raises questions about how identity and relationships function when visual recognition is removed. As social media and contemporary culture continue to reinforce beauty standards, it becomes important to imagine alternative forms of identification beyond appearance. This shift challenges how we navigate social interactions and what it means to truly “know” someone.
With this project, I aim to simulate the experience of living with using Sound as identification. Sound reflects a person’s actions without appearance, so I use it alongside the metaphor of a shadow, something that suggests presence while obscuring detail. Through designs that translate individual rhythms into sound, the project explores how people might recognize and connect through audio. Each work replaces facial imagery with personalized, non-visual forms, leaving sound and rhythm as the main points of recognition.
