Design is one of the most challenging disciplines to learn because every project is different. No curriculum can possibly cover the amount of skills needed to be successful in the real world. Additionally, students might be unaware of the many design essays and books that offer support.
Client projects can quickly become overwhelming as students are forced to contend with an endless stream of opinions, and constant pressure to be creative faster. WIP is a publication structured in a “choose your own adventure format” that helps students find answers to common design questions by following responses from working professionals. One of the central ideas of the publication is that designers need exposure to fields unrelated to design. Many entries are derived from people in other disciplines.
The post-bound format allows the reader to add or remove pages, so the publication becomes a constant companion that expands alongside the user’s knowledge of design. The entirety of the book’s content is formed from digestible excerpts that are stitched together to form a larger message. The goal of the project is to encourage new designers to think critically about their creative practice.
