The project Words from a wishing well seeks to answer the following questions: How do we translate sounds into visuals? We know they translate mood and emotion, but to what extent can we create an album cover that translates the music to the best of our ability? This project is my band Shower Curtain's first full-length record. It marks the band’s first collaborative effort, and the development of a solo project into a band. Beyond what is being told through the lyricism, this record tells the story of people coming into each other's lives in a serendipitous way, and following one’s intuition when navigating opportunities presented.
The title is a metaphor for that intuitive process: the conversation that happens in a wishing well after you make a wish and the signs it sends in return. It also plays on the title of one the singles “wish you well.” The cover art is a picture of the band on a winter day, and it was manipulated to have texture and grain overlayed with shades of pink. The editing decisions reflect the band’s description of the sound: textured, sweet, emotional, dreamy, yet heavy. The whimsical illustrations accompany the surreal wishing well metaphor, yet still translate the fuzzy elements of the sludgy guitars. The labels, inserts and J-cards follow the visual identity of the record across the board. This project will be available at in-person stores and online by the fall of 2024, as the band begins its production.
