As a Turkish person living in NYC, I always long for a piece of home and a cohesive community experience. While living in the city, I have yet to find a space that makes me feel at home. Acknowledging the cultural and social needs of the Turkish community in NYC and focused on introducing Turkish culture—mainly through a modern reinterpretation of traditional Ottoman Empire coffee houses—this branding project serves as a hub for a community that desires a connection to one's roots through a diverse cultural space. It functions as a contemporary "kahvehane" (coffee house) where games are played all day, from morning to late at night. My inspiration for this project stems from my father's years of experience working at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, where his social life revolved around the kahvehane scene. Daily interactions with fellow locals helped him build a close-knit community. Influenced by the rich heritage of Ottoman Empire coffee houses, the visual interpretation of the space draws inspiration from ornate patterns, vibrant colors, and a fusion of traditional and contemporary design elements. This synthesis captures the essence of Turkish culture while resonating with NYC's cosmopolitan spirit, creating a sense of belonging in a foreign urban context.
