<Blank Space> is a book series that introduces different human lives. It displays the process of connecting a person to other people and the world. What do you know about your friends and family? What do you decide not to show about yourself? What is something that you keep hidden in your room hoping nobody finds out? Is it a secret hobby of yours? Or is it an embarrassing trace of your past?
<Blank Space> aims to reveal these secrets most subtly by making Dictionaries About Individuals. Each dictionary will cover one person, starting with myself. Each issue contains the person’s possessions, purchases, and an interview. This will give the slightest sense of each person’s private life.
The goal of this project is to find a new way to learn about a person. This series of dictionaries will work as a tool to breach the wall between someone’s private and public life. Some readers will smile while noticing how their lives are similar to others. Others will be surprised how people’s lives can be different from one another.
Each book has a different design approach depending on the person it is trying to capture. Each person has their unique lifestyle which adds to the diversity of the design. The overall structure of the chapters connects them as a series, but the details in typography and images are different depending on the interviewee. This also matches the second goal of my project: to bring different people together.
