In an era where digital technologies challenge traditional art boundaries, GEN[ERA]TIVE explores the interplay between human creativity and artificial intelligence within contemporary visual culture. This project presents a case study of a recent high-profile album rollout, that stood at the confluence of public acclaim and critique due to its association with fan-made AI-generated imagery. Drawing from my firsthand experience as a lead designer during the album’s cycle, this project examines the explosive public reception to the rollout, my work, and the resulting discourse, highlighting a crucial moment where digital and generative art forms converged in mainstream culture.
GEN[ERA]TIVE stands to humanize the work by unfolding the behind-the-scenes narrative of my design process, showcasing the craftsmanship and commitment behind each piece. This book adopts a hybrid format, combining academic analysis with visual documentation. Each section contrasts the official artworks with early drafts and fan-made AI versions, followed by public reactions that contextualize the larger discussion. This examination challenges the prevailing concern that AI might eclipse human creativity, arguing instead that the viral response highlights an increasing appreciation for human artistry. By demystifying the creative efforts behind some of the album's visuals—at times mistaken as AI-generated—GEN[ERA]TIVE challenges prevailing misconceptions and heralds the irreplaceable role of human creativity in the creative landscape.
