Do you feel safe walking alone at night? The fear of walking alone has become a prevalent part of our daily lives. What if people come together to establish a fear-free community? How can those who share the same concerns support each other?
Simply having a companion can provide a sense of security while walking. Inspired by recent tragic events and my own experiences, I created ToGather, a mobile application that gathers a group of people who wish to walk together from one place to another in an attempt to relieve each other’s anxieties about walking alone. ToGather is thoughtfully designed to reassure people about their safety with a straightforward layout and minimalistic visual elements that can easily be interpreted at any circumstance. Anyone with a verified profile can find a partner or join a group of other commuters. Additional features include one-click alarm, different kinds of sensors to detect an emergency, and real-time location sharing, whose icons are flexible to be altered in favor of user convenience.
The core component of my thesis is to establish a reliable platform where people in the community are proactively engaged to look after each other’s safety. ToGather provides mental support to reduce anxiety. ToGather will remind people about the power of being together beyond simply reducing crime rates.
