During the pandemic, the food delivery industry experienced exponential growth due to the new demand for contactless experiences. Throughout a year of living in post-pandemic New York City, I noticed that large food delivery platforms started to monopolize and take advantage of more efficient delivery methods, which has hurt small restaurants and delivery workers.
We The Local is a food delivery platform specific to local NYC communities that pushes back against the larger platforms’ model by encouraging interaction amongst neighborhoods and using full-time delivery workers instead of gig-based “freelancers.” Full-time delivery workers enable restaurants to cut back on delivery fees and in turn creates more safe, secure delivery jobs. To encourage community interaction and create loyalty for local restaurants, consumers can also vote on favorite restaurants in their area and earn rewards.
Presented here is the design of We The Local’s consumer-facing app as well as advertising to promote it. The idea of discovering your local neighborhood is referenced through outline motifs and a neon green, pulsing gradient indicates popularity and customer feedback. The app’s overall design is simple, yet captivating and brings focus to the discovery and community aspect of local food delivery.
