Movies are an epitome of visual narration among many art forms. I set out to extract the essence of the visual narrative and created a new method of visual language through the use of patterns.
In order to create a new visual communication, I looked at fashion in particular. fashion in movies plays a significant role in instilling the time period, overall aesthetics, characters’ attitude and individuality. Wes Anderson’s vivid style and fashion used in his movies influenced me to create an abstract design language. Taking inspiration from Wes Anderson’s aesthetics in fashion and cinematography, I chose “The Royal Tenenbaums” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” as mediators to illustrate narratives by creating patterns and reinterpreting through print, packaging and digital communication. Individual symbol is created for each character, and those elements interact and generate unique patterns. The pattern books illustrate major scenes in the movies to deliver the story in patterns, and they are animated in the videos. The patterns serve as a new identity of Wes Anderson and are applied on products to showcase their versatility as a visual language.
