Imagine an Asian person. There is already a preexisting image of what that looks like in our heads – smaller eyes, fair skin, good at math, quiet. If an Asian person doesn’t match this description, are they really Asian?
Being Asian and living outside of Asia has its consequences. The diaspora has grown up in a middle ground where they are considered other because of how they look, while people from Asia don’t think they’re Asian enough.
Where Are You Really From is a series of conversations with Asians that have grown up outside of Asia, manifested into individual books. These books are made complex and with many layers to display the different layers built within a person of many cultures. They aim to display unique stories and faces, and to push back the generalization of Asians based on how they look.
