I became interested in this “in-between” language that was being formed specifically by Korean-Americans because of our specific experiences and wanted to document and make something tangible out of it.
The medium is a dictionary (both print and video) because people tend to turn to dictionaries when it comes to learning a language they don’t understand. It’s also interesting because a lot of the content was written by me and can be nonsensical at times, but because the medium is a dictionary, everything looks purposeful.
This dictionary matters because it brings attention to our experiences and many Korean-Americans can relate to them. Even people outside of Korean-Americans can identify with being an “in-between-er” and this idea of forming their own languages when being bilingual, trilingual, etc.
