People often thought about the signature takeout box and the fortune cookies when we talk about Chinese food. And when we thought about the taste of Chinese food, people coming from a different country and different cultural backgrounds will have different answers. The reason is that “Chinese food” in Western countries will feature the ingredients people popularly eat in their countries. People seem to care less and less about the originality of the recipes nowadays. This phenomenon makes people ignore the value of the ingredients and eventually leads to a misunderstanding of one’s culture.
Chinese traditional food culture consists of eight cuisines with different styles. The diverse climate, geomorphic features, and agricultural produce from each region make the eight cuisines distinct. “This division reflects regional culture, which is gradually reduced due to the modern economic globalization.” Over time, there are more and more people who are not familiar with this disappearing tradition. People who have deep relations and their home’s memory with the food culture feel that they have been constantly abandoned.
Gushi is an app designed to let people learn about Chinese regional cuisines’ history and cook the dishes according to the traditional recipe. It also helps to bring back the disappearing food tradition and memories, provides people a space to communicate and learn about each other’s regional food culture.
