Why are we so emotionally attached to objects? This question stemmed from a moment I shared with my roommate, who showed me these love letters that she had kept from her elementary days. It was so fascinating to see her find so much emotional value in them after all these years.
It has become apparent that almost everyone builds some type of relationship with the things around them. We seem to find emotional value in these objects, because they act as extensions of ourselves. They become manifestations of our emotions, feelings, memories, etc. Whether they’re physical or not, these objects around us manage to form bonds with us in ways that are quite phenomenal.
Self— is a digital archive of stories that reflects the bonds we build with objects. Through this archive, visitors will gain a deeper perspective on how their thoughts and memories are being reflected through the objects that they are attached to. Stories are interlinked with others, creating an endless web of interconnected experiences, further affirming that everyone has experienced this phenomena to a certain extent. It strives to be an ever growing archive, allowing all visitors to share their own stories. As the archive grows, a greater variety of stories will be added, further expanding the web of experiences, no matter what kind they are.
