We are always trying to find our place in the world. We use cartography to figure out where we are physically as well as astrology to understand who we are. There are thousands of different types of maps that give us this comfort of sense of self, physically as well as psychologically. However, something we are surrounded by that doesn’t have a map (or at least a well known one) is music.
I believe that what we listen to can inform one much more than any coordinates or star placement. Music has the power to fill uncomfortable silences, alleviate feelings of loneliness, and relieve boredom. We use it as a mechanism to explore feelings of joy to grief. GrooveMap is an exploration that defines the placement of different genres of music according to BPM. The colors relate to wavelength and the wavelength is related to the BPM. Colors with a slower wavelength signify a slower BPM while colors with a higher wavelength signify a faster BPM. With the map, a series of applications were created to explore the functions of the map.
