Throughout the last couple of years, the internet has made so much impact in the last two decades and people are now almost inseparable from online activities, especially with the help of fast computer technology development. Being one of billions of consumers dwelling on the internet, I have come to the conclusion that most of the people have become adapted to the “usual” functions and designs on the internet that it has become more of an internet “instinct.” Though it brings comfort to people learning the internet by keeping these basic functions and aesthetics written on stone, it also makes mold in which designs and concepts could become very limited.
As a graphic designer, I want to challenge users facing functions and designs that they are very familiar with, yet could come off as frustrating, confusing, or even discomforting when they do not come off as they “should.” I want to recreate websites and elements that people will attempt to navigate through using functions they are used to, yet all of these will be quite peculiar and odd from the original and do things that are not “normal.” Not only does sudden change make people feel confused and uncomfortable, but it will also make people realize that not everything has to follow the internet norms. As the final outcome, I am hoping to see people break the mold that designers and internet users have set on stone, and become more adaptable to many more different elements the internet could offer.
