Within the Covid-19 pandemic, many artists, designers, photographers and ordinary individuals have been forced to adapt to a shift in the creative industry and find means to present, translate and problem solve ideas through the complexities given within an uncertain social landscape. My biggest question and overall theme my project intends to address is, how does one visually represent the idea of physical separation while displaying unity in graphic design? For my thesis project I have created the Separation Issue, a print intended publication that combines personal interviews that addresses and dissects the idea of adaptability and how creatives pushed forward during this uncertain time. The publication also consists of secondary articles that tackle notions of adaptability within the fashion industry during Covid-19, while displaying aspects of isolation within the design structure. The treatment of imagery within the design framework, was crucial in order to further emphasize my concept of separation. Within these articles, I referenced the Zoom window size and formed a grid based off of these dimensions to display detachment. In the spreads I have created, I utilized the combination of type, imagery and sequence to showcase the presence of separation and how these individuals have coped through barriers on a personal and emotional level. Visually, a primary theme to communicate the idea of isolation effectively was the presence of negative space and the use of lines to contrast separation and connection. In the interview articles, it was important for me to ask raw authentic questions.
