Taking an inward look into what I am most passionate about, I used design to enable, spread, and bring awareness to a very close-to-home Human Rights issue.
Thinking about the overarching theme of Chinese Propaganda, specifically into China’s Uyghur concentration camps and their injustices; I’ve cheaply produced and distributed informational packets, inspired by Samizdat Books and emphasized through anonymity (for my own safety). These booklets and pamphlets contain leaked information, annotated propaganda and various stories and interviews from former detainees of China’s Uyghur camps. I’ve also been anonymously circulating a video documentary, in order to communicate to young activists about the injustices of Uyghur camps.
I took advantage of the natural distribution methods from existing published materials (i.e newspapers) and the internet (i.e anonymous forums). Disguising my findings within newspapers and throughout the internet is essential to communicate to a broader audience, anonymously. This way, the information is not limited to young activists in NYC, but to all over the globe.
You will run into one of these copies soon. Meanwhile, please dig deeper into China’s Uyghur camps. As designers, we are held accountable for our design decisions and what we choose to put out there for the world to consume. Let’s communicate in a meaningful way and call for societal change against China’s Uyghur camps.
