There’s no denying the impact communication technology has on our everyday routine —but it’s become an extension of our lives without our conscious consent. This project encapsulates a critique of social media, a technology that has affected how we value emotion and the ways we interact in our society.
My design response is a visual soundscape. Narrated by sound, a set of images and short clips reminiscent of the 21st century information landscape: dirty pop-up ads, reality tv snippets, ads that enforce subtle propaganda, juxtaposed against the formation of an embryo, a new life symbolizing innocence. Through the fusion of these two extremes I hope to spark critical thinking in viewers, to reconsider the technologies in our day-to-day life and how they affect us. The jaggedness and chaotic nature of the video represents a certain anxiety tied to social media, specifically Instagram, in regards to how influential it is and how it affects the youth.
While this approach might seem acidic, the tactics social media use to monetize the attention of its users, while compiling large sums of data on them for their own ulterior motives, is worse. These communication tools have been developed to erase the lines between artificial and the real world, in order to create a more pliable and easily-influenced user.
