In India, goddesses are worshipped as a source of power and inspiration. Each deity is associated with a different trait that defines their unique characteristics. Today, we see the patriarchy worshiping goddesses but discriminating against women — while women in the past were active members in decision making, many are now restricted to family roles. The goal of this project is to explore the role goddesses play in our society and whether they can be a positive model for women.
Devi Says is catered towards young and striving Indian women that are being challenged by society’s moral standards and expectations. The seven traits captured in Devi Says are derived from stories of women that achieved great heights and proved patriarchy wrong. Devi Says takes the form of a seasonal magazine that compiles stories of women past and present and an app that challenges patriarchal expectations. The magazine gives insight into the many traditions celebrated to worship Hindu goddesses, juxtaposed with stories from women speaking about their experiences and beliefs. The app is designed to challenge women with various activities that they might have been discriminated "not" to do.
The aim of Devi Says is to change mental perception and build a community where women can enjoy the benefits of their rights and overcome boundaries set by the patriarchy. Jawaharlal Nehru once stated that the status of women could determine a nation’s worth. To see change, we need to act.
