As a Chinese woman in my twenties, this project begins from the contradiction between my mother and me, and is interested in deeply exploring the generation gap between the current generation and the previous generation. The generation gap in China is not only the product of historical development and the external cultural environment but also the result of interactions between subjects of different generations. In the past, due to the orderly succession of generations, the offspring followed without deviation from their elders. However, the new generation is trying to break the balance of intergenerational inheritance.
Hi, Mom is an illustrated book based on the exploration of the generation gap and an in-depth understanding of the older generation society from the perspective of the younger generation. It takes us back to the 1960s when mothers grew up, observing and discovering the influence of their environment, life experience, and educational background on them, using the method of comparison to explain the differences in lifestyle, consumption, and relationships in contemporary Chinese mothers and daughters from different families.
The book expresses that even though the incompatibility between the two generations lies in the different eras they live in, we must give both sides enough respect, accept differentiation, give to each other understanding, and independent space in life. This project is dedicated to all mothers: Thank you for your patience and company as the greatest mom, and I’m sorry I drove you crazy sometimes… And I love you mama.
