Sound is something that can’t be seen by the human eye, however it is a material thing that can be represented visually by both humans and nature. I have always been interested in the perception of sound. It is very intriguing to me the way one sound can be interpreted visually in so many different ways.
The focus of my thesis is the visualization of musical pieces. I have studied different methods of visualizing music, and I discovered multiple principles that are best for visualizations. In my experimentations, I have limited myself to only two of these principles at a time. I have used arrangement principle, the placing of type and objects on a page, and combined it with typeface, weight, color, spacing, scale, form, and image. This approach has forced me to explore each principle in detail, and was very useful for my personal design growth. I have created a book that summarizes my research and shows my visual explorations. I have written two songs for my first part of the research. For the final part, I have chosen a song by Billie Eilish, "bad guy.” I wanted to experiment with a very popular song that everyone could recognize, and music that people have never heard before.
I hope this project will demonstrate to whoever is looking at it how limitation can actually help you discover new ways of creativity. This research is a tool for people to creating musical representations such as cover art.
