An out of body experience (OBE) is a phenomenon in which a person perceives themselves outside of their physical body. This feeling can last anywhere from two seconds to five hours. Up to ten percent of the human population has experienced at least one, but the scientific research behind them is limited and therefore they are rarely discussed. This means people who have OBEs are often questioned and misunderstood.
Displaced is a display typeface inspired by the phenomenon of OBEs. Each character of the typeface is separated at the horizontal axis to represent the separation between physical body and metaphysical consciousness that occurs during an OBE. The type specimen takes the form of a coptic-bound zine. It contextualizes the character set alongside educational material, detailing the scientific research behind OBEs and experiences from individuals. This project works to make the OBE visible, thereby demystifying the experience and inciting curiosity about them.
