Why is decision-making and the process one goes through to get to a final outcome so daunting? As humans, we fluctuate between a need for control and insecurity of the unknown in every decision, forcing ourselves into a perpetual state of indecision. We rely on external forces to minimize the weight of our decisions, whether that be faith, luck, or chance objects we use as children.
Everything in Between is an investigation into indecision through an installation that invites participants to use a digital Magic 8 ball which selects a permanent tattoo from an index of flash designs based on decision-making objects like dice, daisies, quarters, and cootie catchers. Additionally, the exhibition features floating collaged displays and temporary tattoos for those unwilling to commit to permanence and a tattoo binder documenting the indecision experienced. The project urges participants to adopt indecision by leading them through a process that relies on chance and the relinquishing of one’s autonomy.
