How can we form community when we feel alienated from those we desperately crave to feel connected to? How can we navigate the polarities of living in between two distinct cultural worlds? These questions have been a constant wonderment for me as a Croatian-American citizen who lives between two worlds.
To begin to answer these difficult questions, I created Nešto Drugo, an online experimental publication driven by cultural celebration and artistic expression. “Nešto Drugo” (literally translating to “something else”) is a Croatian-English culture and humanities magazine that produces content by Croatian individuals for other Croatian individuals. Nešto Drugo is a collective and communal blog, in which people either connected to or interested in Croatian public and cultural life can share their personal histories, stories, opinions, passions, and occupations with a weekly prompt/theme.
Nešto Drugo employs cultural iconography with my own personal illustrations and typography in an attempt to keep the audience grounded and connected to my own passions and connections associated with my Croatian-American heritage. With publication divisions dedicated to pop culture, music, writing, visual arts, and regional stories, Nešto Drugo hopes to bridge a significant cultural gap by authentically connecting people through mutual interests and personal anecdotes—so that those who have spent time “lost in translation” can finally feel understood.
